Drama Addiction

I've reached an age where I simply do not enjoy drama anymore. Does anyone ever really enjoy drama? Yes I believe they do. I think that human beings need a certain amount of drama to keep them from getting bored. I think that some people thrive on drama.

I know that I used to be one of those people that needed a certain amount of drama in my life to keep things interesting but not anymore. Now this is actually an easy statement to say but not always as true as we would like it to be. I've been saying it for years but not living it. Now I live it and can recognize it.

For me the drama was in the enjoyment of gossip, the creation of desperate situations, and the need to help others in deperate need. I would seek these things out without even realizing it and then complain because these things continued to appear in my life.

However I have found that since we have lived as Full Time RVers, life has been more peaceful. We do not listen to nor share gossip because campgrounds are small and these kind of activities make them just that much smaller. We do not create desperate situations because we live a simple existance and there is not room for this type of action. We cannot seek out others to help because at the moment we are just surviving on our own and we have no room to bring others into our living space.

Without these dramas in my life I have had less stress and more time to reflect on more important matters. When you release the need for your dramas, whatever they might be, you can focus on the self. You can figure out who you are and what your true needs are and your nature is. There is times to relax and enjoy just living.

Now when I am on the phone with a friend who enjoys drama by way of rumors or situations I can respectfully remove myself from their drama before it becomes mine. I'm not saying do not listen to your friends problems if they need you to, I'm saying do not let it draw you in. You do not have to be a part of the drama to be a good friend.

The world is full of drama and, if you let it, it can drain your energy. Allowing yourself to become drawn in to the dramas of the world can sap away your own spirit. Take the time to figure out what your drama addictions are and find a way to release them. This is harder than it sounds. Releasing drama addictions takes time and effort. As with any addiction, drama addiction can come back if you are not watchful.

Once the drama addiction is under control you can begin to take the steps in finding out who you really are.

Examples of drama addiction. This is simply a list of some possible drama addictions but is by no means all of them.

1. Rumor creating
2. Rumor spreading
3. Exaggeration
4. Lying
5. Intentional Cruelty to others
6. Self victimizing (always needing to have others feel bad for you)
7. Needing to be needed (looking for other's drama to be the hero)

And the list could continue. Some of these things are always harmful and some are only harmful in excess. Look at your life. Do you seem to always have one particular theme playing out over and over in excess. This is YOUR drama. As with any addiction, recognizing the problem is the first step. Releasing that drama is probably the most difficult thing you will ever do and be mindful because it is easy to accidently replace one drama with another.

Hobbies are a healthy way to replace drama in your life. Find a craft or hobby you enjoy and spend time each day working on it. Read books. Reading is a healthy way to replace drama in your life. (just be careful not to emulate the book if you are reading a book filled with drama)

Learning to live without excessive drama in your life is not easy but it IS possible. I say excessive drama because I do not think that it is possible to live in a world full of drama without a little seeping into your own life but you can keep it in check. It is possible to live a life with minimal drama without removing yourself from the world.
